One of my favorite parts of my job is meeting new students from all over the world and learning more about their cultures. I really had no idea what to expect for my first trip, but I was ready for whatever adventure or challenge was thrown my way. International recruitment isnt always a glamorous as people think it is. One of the biggest challenges can be the language barrier or learning the cultural norms in each new country. Traveling for work can be hard, so it is important to take time and appreciate the culture whenever you can in between visits. I was fortunate enough to arrive one day before our visits started, so knowing I had a busy 2.5 weeks a head of me I took the time to visit the Taj Mahal. Let me tell youthe pictures do not do the Taj Mahal justice. It is gorgeous and massive. I definitely recommend checking out the UNESCO website f or more information about why the Taj was built. Here are just a couple of fun pictures of me in front of the Taj. I will also add it was extremely hot and humid that day! I feel very fortunate to have visited the Taj Mahal while in India, but onto the real reason I spent 2.5 weeks in India in Augustrecruitment for Illinois! I started my trip in New Delhi. I traveled to India with a group of universities from all over the United States. We each took a city in India and planned visits, counselor meetings, and/or college fairs. On average we visited 3-4 schools and some evenings we had college fairs or information sessions. A typical day abroad starts around 6:00 AM (have to get up early to beat traffic!) and usually ends between 5-8:00 PM depending on what evening events we had. It was so great to meet so many wonderful students interested in attending Illinois. When we visited high schools, we typically gave a presentation on studying in the US and our various schools. We would then leave time for a QA session and then we would host a mini-college fair. This was a great way for us to get to know students and their interests, as well as help them learn more about the various applications, timelines, and requirements for different US institutions. The picture above is from Modern School in the Delhi area. We were in Delhi during the Indian Independence Day, so we were able to see various celebrations at schools all over the city. After this Welcome assembly, we had a mini college fair. Below is a typical college fair set-up. We saw close to 100 students during this fair. It was incredible to see so many enthusiastic students! We were able to travel to several cities all over India (New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata) during our trip. We met so many wonderful students from all over this beautiful country.We typically rode in vans between each visit/appointment and then we flew between the various cities. We spent a lot of time in cars and on planes, so Im always looking for new books to download to read while Im on the road (feel free to comment any suggestions you have). It was exciting to see so many different parts of India and learn about each region. During our time in Bangalore, the team hosted a breakfast for international high school counselors. It is apparent that Politics has an indirect connection to Philosophy because both aim to provide a good human life course. In this part reconciliation is quite evident since Politics is ruled out by people or humans that present the way to righteousness and lawfulness based on human perception enacted by the law while Philosophy which Plato deals with dwells more with the spiritual and divine intervention as the correct path to rectitude and uprightness. Socrates perceived that his questioning to many people gained him the reputation as an annoying person. His life mission interpreted in the speech that true wisdom comes from the gods while wisdoms of man together with their achievements have diminutive or are not valuable at all. It was greatly stressed that Socrates accepts as legitimate that the power of his lawful superior, may it be divine or human should be followed. But when there is a discrepancy or conflict between the two: Politics or Philosophy, he deems that the divine authority should take precedence and primacy: â€Å"Gentlemen, I am your grateful and devoted servant, but I owe a greater obedience to God than to you; and as long as I draw breath and have my faculties I shall never stop practicing philosophy† (Plato, Dialogue Part 1). Socrates articulated that he will not stop his aspiration for his fellow Athenians to have greater awareness of moral truth and goodness. Though, people might impede his questioning or arguing and even if they withdraw all the charges against him, Socrates put across his plan of not bringing an end to his inquiries for the pursuance of truth. In this dialogue, it can be seen that Philosophy and Politics can be reconciled though Philosophy still takes supremacy over Politics. Correspondingly, Socrates describes justice as â€Å"working at that which he is naturally best suited,† along with â€Å"to do one’s own business and not to be a busybody† (433a-433b). He then continues by presenting how to sustain and perfect justice through three cardinal virtues to include Temperance, Wisdom, and Courage (433a-433b). Philosophy correlates with Politics through creating a society that divides people in to three distinct types which are the soldier, producer and ruler. Books II to IV mainly carry out that if a ruler can create just laws, and when the soldiers or warriors follow the orders of their rulers, and if authorities are obeyed by the producers, then it will formulate a society that is rightful and just, thus creating a happier life. Three arguments were presented by Plato why he sees that it is better to be just rather than for the individual to be unjust. The arguments were: An oppressor’s nature will allow him to incur â€Å"horrid pains and pangs† and that the conventional tyrant has a lifestyle that is mentally and physically challenging on a ruler which is the total opposite of a philosopher king that is truth loving (Book IX). Another argument in Book IX that Plato puts forward is that the Philosopher is the only type of ruler that can best run a society since he is acquainted to the Form of the Good. The last one that Plato contends is that â€Å"Pleasures which are approved by the lover of wisdom and reason are the truest† (Book IX). The Republic’s main ideology is to form the government and politics that is governed by philosopher-kings. In this, it is highly susceptible that Philosophy and politics could in some way or another worked hand in hand. Socrates believes that the four types of ruling such as timocracy, democracy, oligarchy and tyranny can lead to corruption of power. The Republic by Plato also contains his Allegory of the Cave where he elucidates how a former prisoner from a cave came to realize that the sun which illuminates the surrounding and which initially blinded him is the Form of the Good that causes the brightness. He also came to realize that it is the sun that made him see and appreciate the beauty and goodness in the things that surround him. Plato considers the caveman as the philosopher, who knows the Form of Good and therefore should educate others to spread the same light he achieved. The dialogue narrates conversations and arguments concerning an Ideal State by manipulating politics through Philosophical ideas and how other forms of governance could not properly and adequately sustain its ruling. Conclusion Though Plato’s â€Å"Apology† and â€Å"The Republic† mainly discuss how Philosophy or love of wisdom should be adhered over and above anything else, it also manifested that Philosophy and politics can reconcile to the betterment of the society. The empire was made up of multiple ethnic groups, and for some of them, Ferdinand supported greater freedom for self-determination. He argued for better treatment of Serbia in particular, fearing that suffering among the Slavs might lead to conflict in the region. At the same time, Ferdinand opposed outright nationalist movements that might threaten to undermine the empire. On political matters, it was reported that Ferdinand frequently disagreed with Emperor Franz Joseph; the two had bitter arguments when they discussed the future of the empire. Heir to the Throne In 1889, the son of Emperor Franz Josef, Crown Prince Rudolf, committed suicide. Franz Ferdinands father Karl Ludwig became next in line to the throne. Upon Karl Ludwigs death in 1896, Franz Ferdinand became the heir apparent to the throne. As a result, he took on new responsibilities and was trained to eventually become the emperor. Marriage and Family Ferdinand first met Countess Sophie Maria Josephine Albina Chotek von Chotkova und Wognin in 1894 and soon fell in love with her. However, she was not considered a suitable spouse since she was not a member of the House of Habsburg. It took a few years and the intervention of other heads of state before Emperor Franz Josef would agree to the marriage in 1899. Their marriage was only allowed on the condition that Sophie would agree to not allow any of her husbands titles, privileges, or inherited property to pass to either her or her children. This is known as a morganatic marriage. Together, the couple had three children: Princess Sophie of Hohenberg; Maximilian, Duke of Hohenberg; and Prince Ernst of Hohenberg. In 1909, Sophie was given the title Duchess of Hohenberg, though her royal privileges were still limited. Trip to Sarajevo In 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand was invited to Sarajevo to inspect the troops by General Oskar Potiorek, the governor of Bosnia-Herzegovina, one of the Austrian provinces. Part of the appeal of the trip was that his wife, Sophie, would be not only welcomed but also allowed to ride in the same car with him. This was otherwise not allowed due to the rules of their marriage. The couple arrived in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914.​ Unbeknownst to Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie, a Serbian revolutionary group called the Black Hand had planned to assassinate the archduke on his trip to Sarajevo. At 10:10 a.m. on June 28, 1914, on the way from the train station to City Hall, a grenade was launched at them by a member of the Black Hand. However, the driver saw something racing through the air and sped up, causing the grenade to hit the car behind them, seriously wounding two occupants. Assassination After meeting with Potiorek at City Hall, Franz Ferdinand and Sophie decided to visit those wounded from the grenade in the hospital. However, their driver made a wrong turn and drove right past a Black Hand conspirator named Gavrilo Princip. When the driver slowly backed up out of the street, Princip pulled a gun and fired several shots into the car, hitting Sophie in the stomach and Franz Ferdinand in the neck. They both died before they could be taken to the hospital. Ferdinand was buried alongside his wife in Artstetten Castle, a royal property in Austria. The car in which they were killed is on display at the Museum of Military History in Vienna, Austria, along with Ferdinands bloodied uniform. Legacy The Black Hand attacked Franz Ferdinand as a call for independence for Serbians who lived in Bosnia, part of former Yugoslavia. When Austro-Hungary retaliated against Serbia, Russia- which was then allied with Serbia- joined the war against Austria-Hungary. This started a series of conflicts that eventually led to World War I. Germany declared war on Russia, and France was then drawn in against Germany and Austro-Hungary. When Germany attacked France through Belgium, Britain was brought into the war as well. Japan entered the war on Germanys side. In order to touch basis on what everything truly is and get a solid meaning, let’s discuss what an art style really is, â€Å"..Art styles describe the way the artwork looks. Style is basically the manner in which the artist portrays his or her subject matter and how the artist expresses his or her vision. Style is determined by the characteristics that describe the artwork, such as the way the artist employs form, color, and composition, to name just a few. Another important factor in determining the style of an artwork is to examine the way the artist handles the medium, taking into account the method or technique that the artist uses. An additional aspect of art styles is the philosophy or driving force behind the artwork. All of these stylistic elements are defined by the choices artists make as they compose their artwork.† [ArtIsFun] So, now that we understand that — the main issue I feel needs to be addressed is that recognizable art is not limiting the creativity of an artist, it just limits their field. It doesn’t stop them from expanding, rather than allow them to be free from pressure of the new-tone art, as they stick with their recognizable art and expand from there. Consistency is never bad, in fact, it’s considered stable so long as there’s also a slight variation, whether through purpose, tone, color, meaning, etc. For instance, a particular artist may have recognizable art for marketing purposes. If someone were too originally paint flowers of different variations, and then start painting people – the difference can be confusing; â€Å"If your goal is to create a name-recognized brand – like Mary Engelbreit, for example, you have to develop a strong, tight and recognizable style. People have to see it and know, â€Å"Mary Engelbreit.† Mary is known for her black and white checks, cherries, cute characters and use of quotes in her work. If she started painting landscapes, it would confuse the market.† [Reed] However, another issue is that when creating a portfolio to impress a major employer, they seek variation and different styles; but why? If you’re good at it, why change? They want to be able to see all that you’re good at. Very similar to how American Idol put its contestants through rock music and then through country music. So, even though you may be particularly good at a particular style, variation is sought upon when searching for a career. The broader, the more unique even if you’re placed doing one design for the rest of your life in that particular career.
